Ahmedabad, September 26 The Bhavnagar Municipality on Friday cleared an alleged encroachment by the Asaram Bapu Ashram in Sindhunagar area of the city. On Thursday, Gujarat Minister for State (Home) Amit Shah had washed the government’s hands off land allocation to the Ashram on the floor of the House.
Bhavnagar Municipal Commissioner P M Sharma said: “We cleared some illegal encroachment by the Ashram today in the presence of the local police. The land was given to one Modh Brahman Gnati Sanstha for constructing a boys’ hostel in 1977, but was usurped by the Ashram authorities.” Sharma added that the Ashram authorities had constructed a compound wall and a few rooms and had earlier refused to vacate the land.
“Today, we demolished the land and handed over the possession to the Sanstha. Though there was a minor resistance from the people, everything finally went off peacefully,” he added.
Bhavnagar Police Superintendent Manoj Shashidharan said: “The Municipal Corporation cleared the illegal encroachment by the Asaram Ashram in the Sindhunagar area of the city today. We did have some bandobast in place for the same. Some people did gather at the spot, but there was no untoward incident during the process.”
